The Alagnak River (above) is a part of the national wild and scenic river system and is designated a wild river, because of it’s outstandingly remarkable scenic, fish and wildlife, and recreation attributes. As such the upper 56 miles of the Alagnak is to be preserved in a free-flowing condition, kept healthy and pristine for present and future generations. Located 290 miles southwest of Anchorage the Alagnak’s headwaters lie within the rugged Aleutian Range of neighboring Katmai National Park & Preserve. The rivers extraordinary rainbow trout, char, grayling, and abundant salmon runs have helped it become one of the most popular fishing destinations in all of southwest Alaska, even so the river rarely seems crowded. American Creek offers some of the areas better stream fishing for rainbows and char and is considered a Alagnak Bowdry fly anglers paradise in June and early July. August has spawning sockeye in abundance and providing the primary food source for the rainbows and char as they feed voraciously upon their eggs.  Float trips can be arraigned on American Creek through Alaska Rainbow Adventures, and day fly in trips are also available with guides in the King Salmon area.

August brings spawning sockeye salmon to the streams that feed the lakes of Katmai & the Bristol Bay region and right behind the sockeye you find huge rainbow trout. One of the most famous of these streams is Moraine creek.  It has been said that the Moraine might be one of Alaska's best fly out fishing experiences, whether on a fly out for the day or even better a  multi-Day float trip, Moraine creek offers some of the best "big rainbow" trout fishing in the world.
